Edward Steichen

Edward Steichen was a well-known photographer during the early twentieth century. He was born March 27, 1879 in Bivange, Luxembourg. Later, in 1880, he immigrated to the United States of America. He is known for doing art in the styles of pictorialism, modernism, and even commercial work (like high fashion photography).

He was the most published artist is Alfred Stieglitz’s journal, Camera Work. Steichen and Steiglitz worked together with Camera Work, by not only publishing Steichen’s work, but Steichen also helped to design the cover and logo for the journal. He also helped Steiglitz open his 291 Gallery.

Steichen started with pictorialism (ex: the second photograph in this post, Edward Steichen, The Flatiron, 1904). He then moved to modern photography, and finally to fashion photography. He is extremely well known for his fashion photography.

His photographs in the magazine Art et Decoration (1911) are considered to be the first modern fashion photography. He photographed dresses by many well-known designers, and continued to do so throughout his life. Edward Steichen did so many amazing things – painting, photography, film, documentaries, and curated the New York Museum of Modern Art. He did all of this until he passed away March 25, 1973 at the age of ninety three.
